San Antonio Fire officials came down with the historic decision to cancel all public fireworks displays this year because of extreme drought conditions. Organizers with the San Antonio Parks Foundation announced on Friday that the city of San Antonio will still host its big July 4th bash, minus the fireworks. “We’re just as patriotic as the next guy,” said Assistant Fire Chief Early Crayton, with the San Antonio Fire Department. “We’re in the business of protecting the lives of the citizens of San Antonio, so we have to look at it from a professional point of view and given that, we’re going to air on the side of safety.” However, Lila Cockrell, San Antonio Parks Foundation president, said Friday that the city’s free July 4th Celebration at Woodlawn Lake will go on and that they are inviting people for a fun day filled with music, games and plenty of food.

She said they are also working on a surprise for the community. “We are trying to work on an alternative plan that will be a lot of fun,” said Cockrell.
